Patronscan Launches in Downtown Tucson

Downtown Tucson is rolling out a new layer of nightlife safety technology, and Patronscan is proud to be their partner of choice. Beginning in August, 17 bars and restaurants across downtown Tucson are deploying Patronscan handheld ID scanners as part of Together Tucson, a shared safety initiative led by the Downtown Tucson Partnership, giving participating venues a coordinated way to verify age, catch fraudulent IDs, and flag disruptive patrons in real time.

Why Downtown Tucson Is Investing in ID Scanning Now

The Downtown Tucson Partnership launched the program in April 2025 with three founding venues, aiming to reduce violence, safety issues, and disruptive incidents in the city’s entertainment district. Tragically, the initiative gained new urgency after a mass shooting on July 19, 2026, near Congress Street and 6th Avenue left nine people wounded, prompting downtown operators, Tucson police, and city leaders to look hard at what more could be done to keep the community safe.

In the weeks since, Together Tucson has grown from its original three venues to 17 participating operators, all now equipping their doors with Patronscan handheld ID scanners. Downtown Tucson Partnership President and CEO Crystal Moore has been direct about the goal: give downtown businesses another practical tool to identify repeat offenders and fake ID use, without any single operator having to police the district alone.

How the Together Tucson ID Scanner Network Works

Each participating venue scans ID at the door using a Patronscan handheld device. The scanner verifies that a guest is 21 or older and checks the ID against Patronscan’s fraud detection database, catching not just fake state-issued licenses but altered out-of-state IDs and passports as well. If a patron is removed from one venue for disruptive behavior or presents a fraudulent ID, staff can log a note that’s shared across the network, so other participating businesses know before that same person walks through their door.

Importantly, the system is built around operator choice, not a shared blacklist that overrides individual judgment. Participation in the network is voluntary, and each business decides independently whether to act on shared information when deciding who to admit.

Built for Arizona’s Compliance Landscape, Too

Beyond the safety network, Patronscan’s scanners are built to support the fundamentals every Arizona bar and restaurant licensee is already responsible for under the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control. It accepts only valid, unexpired, government-issued ID with a photo and date of birth. A forensic scan does in a second what a visual check can miss: it confirms the ID is genuine and confirms the age on it, creating a timestamped record operators can point to if a sale or entry decision is ever questioned.

For downtown Tucson specifically, that means every scan is doing double duty. It supports the district-wide safety effort under Together Tucson while also giving individual venues a stronger compliance record at the door.

Patronscan by the Numbers

Patronscan’s technology has been refined across more than two decades of real-world deployment in bars, restaurants, and entertainment districts across North America, Australia, and the UK:

  • 500M+ IDs verified worldwide
  • 14,000+ ID and document types supported
  • 20+ years in identity verification experience
  • 93% client retention rate

That track record is part of why Downtown Tucson Partnership chose Patronscan’s handheld scanners to anchor Together Tucson’s expansion. Proven fake ID detection, built for the pace of a busy door on a Friday night.

What This Means for Downtown Tucson

Together Tucson’s expansion is ultimately about making downtown Tucson’s nightlife district a place people want to keep coming back to. One where operators are working together, not competing in silos, on the basic question every door person has to answer: is this person who they say they are, and should they be here tonight? Patronscan is proud to be part of that effort as it rolls out across downtown Tucson this August.
